'On the Record' audiences also are witnessing the birth of a star in Ashley Brown
as the show's ingénue.
"... Brown's concise, thrilling voice is the very first thing we hear
in the show and the very last. Long, lithe and fresh, she's also the first and last thing we see. It's an astonishing first
impression that leaves us much to remember."
Critical response to "Record" has been mixed - the dreaded "cute" word
has been consistently used, but Brown has come through it smelling like a rose - and getting the show's best notices, outshining
Tony Award-nominated star Emily Skinner.
FROM KDHX Theater Review:
As Kristen, Muny veteran Ashley Brown grabs attention at the very
beginning by walking alone on to the bare stage and singing a lovely a cappella version of "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes".
FROM Aroundphilly.com
But the real treat of the evening was Ashley Brown’s performance,
the new talent on the block. Brown sings with power, with emotion, with energy, and it is sheer joy just watching her. She
is destined to have a great career, even at 22 years old
FROM richmond.com:
Ashley Brown is the true star in this performance. If you're looking for
a real live Belle or Jasmine, Ashley's pristine voice makes her the living embodiment of a Disney princess. If you close your
eyes when she sings "Part of that World" or "Reflection," you just might believe you're listening to Ariel or Mulan.
FROM www.talkinbroadway.com:
As early as the Prologue, Ashley Brown shows that she has the perfect
Disney heroine voice. . . .Kristen appears as fresh-faced and virtuous as any character in Disneyland, and Brown presents
her in an appealing way, with a solid and beautiful voice, stopping just short of saccharine.
